Nagpur: Forty-five traffic signals across the city are out of order, leading to chaos on busy intersections and accidents. There are 145 traffic signals in the city which means over 31% are not working. The city traffic police claimed that the matter has already been communicated to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s electric department and Decofurn — the private firm entrusted with maintaining traffic signals.
“No efforts have been taken to ensure smooth functioning of signals. Even timers have started developing snags and causing frequent mishaps,” said a traffic cop deployed at Rani Jhansi Square.
“The 45 signals listed by cops as faulty include the ones at Sunil Hotel T-point, Congress Nagar T-point, Ajni railway ROB, VRCE T-Point, Congress Nagar T-point and Dharampeth Coffee House Square. Timers of most of the signals were out of order,” a cop said.
Since traffic signals on busy thoroughfares are either not working properly and even timers at many working signals are flawed, there’s a rise in accidents. The NMC, which is busy working on turning Nagpur into a Smart City, is paying no heed to repair the signals. (Read More)
